No one prepares you for the shock of seeing your mate’s legs blown off

E=MC2 Productions stages new play to raise awareness of combat veterans with PTSD

“They don’t teach you how to cope with the trauma of war. No one prepares you for the shock of seeing your mate’s legs blown off,” says combat veteran Glen Hale in a provocative new one-act play The War Within, by local writer Liz Coyle-Camp, which premieres this Saturday (27 April) at The Woolstore Theatre One Act Play Festival in Codford.

The play, drawing from blogs and videos posted by British combat vets and their families on the internet, takes the audience on a tour of soldier Glen Hale’s severely traumatised mind letting them experience the night terrors and flashbacks of his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  A mental illness which for Glen, goes undiagnosed with fatal consequences. The War Within also explores the devastating impact of PTSD on soldiers’ wives, families and friends and calls on the community to recognise and support our “invisibly wounded” war heroes, who Glen’s mum warns “are ticking time-bombs”. The four-character play is being performed by Tisbury-based acting troupe, E=MC2 Productions.

“These severely traumatised men and women are often too embarrassed or afraid to ask for help,” says Liz Coyle-Camp who lives in Tisbury. “We need to be more aware of this devastating mental illness. There are soldiers with PTSD and their families who are really suffering, and the problem is getting worse. We need to find better ways of helping them cope with the horrific events they’ve experienced serving their country and to re-enter civilian life as valued and respected community members.”

The War Within premieres Saturday, 27 April at the Woolstore Theatre, Codford. The play is part of The Woolstore One Act Play Festival drama competition, 26-27 April. Tickets: £6/night or £10/two nights from Budgens, Codford 01985 850345 (button 3). Starts 7.30pm.
